What is potentiodynamic polarization?

The potentiodynamic (polarization curve) test is an electrochemical technique that involves scanning the potential of the working electrode while measuring the corresponding current density. It is also known as the “Tafel plot” which is the most utilized electrochemical method. In this test, the specimens are usually encapsulated in resin with 1 cm2 exposure to the solution. The corrosion rate is measured by potentiodynamic (polarization curve). The potentiodynamic (polarization curve) is obtained by plotting the potential as a function of current density (I) (or log I) for each measured point. The potentiodynamic polarization curve can be used to calculate the metal's corrosion potential and rate in any given condition (Tafel slope).
